The first 1000 days of any child’s life are the most critical, starting at inception.  This is the period when the brain is the most receptive to stimulation and growth. Brain development during this stage builds the foundation for the future. 

Thus, early childhood development is a crucial building block for children’s education. The emotional, social, and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development and on the adult they will become. That is why understanding the need to invest in very young children is so important, to maximize their future well-being.

In South Africa, the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated an already fragile sector, resulting in over 100 00 ECD practitioners losing their jobs.  The knock-on effect of this is not just higher unemployment in communities, which is already an overwhelming challenge, it also means that these children in vulnerable communities lose their access to safe, educational early care facilities and the associated daily nutrition the creche provides.
